Give the tires time and attention
Check pressure when the tires are cold and use the vehicle placard, not the maximum molded into the tire sidewall. Inspect all four tires and the spare, if equipped, for cracking, bulges, punctures, and uneven wear. Verify that the jack and wheel-lock key are present.
If the steering vibrates or the car pulls, do not wait for a long freeway drive to investigate it.

Look at coolant level only when the engine is cool, and never open a hot pressurized cap. Confirm engine oil level, washer fluid, exterior lights, wipers, and air conditioning. If routine oil service is due during the trip, handle it before departure rather than searching for a shop on the road.
