Monsoon rain can turn a familiar Tucson street into a pothole obstacle course. After a hard hit, the car may keep moving normally, which makes it tempting to forget about it. Damage is not always obvious from the driver’s seat.
Start with the tire and wheel
A pothole compresses the tire between the road and wheel. That can bend a rim, cut the tire internally, or create a sidewall bubble. A bubble means the tire’s structure has been damaged; it is not something to monitor until the next oil change. A new vibration or a tire that keeps losing pressure also deserves attention.
Look at the impacted wheel in good light, but do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by its jack. If the steering wheel shakes or the tire has a bulge, reduce speed and have the vehicle inspected.
Alignment may be the symptom, not the whole repair
If the car pulls, the steering wheel sits off-center, or the tires begin wearing unevenly, an alignment measurement is useful. But alignment angles do not move by themselves. A bent tie rod, damaged control arm, worn bushing, or shifted suspension part may be the underlying cause.
That is why a physical inspection should come before simply adjusting the numbers. Aligning a car with a loose or bent part does not solve the problem and may not hold.
Listen and feel on the next drive
- A clunk over bumps can point to a loose or damaged suspension component.
- Pulling or wandering can indicate alignment, steering, or tire damage.
- A humming or growling sound may involve a wheel bearing.
- A new vibration can come from a bent wheel, damaged tire, or altered balance.
Some changes are subtle. If you know the impact was severe, an inspection is reasonable even when the car seems mostly normal.
