How to Safely Jump Start Your Car Battery in Tucson
A dead battery can leave you stranded in Tucson, but knowing how to jump start your car correctly can get you back on the road quickly. At Vibrance Automotive, we believe every driver should be prepared for this common issue and understand when it’s time to replace a failing battery.
What You Need to Jump Start a Car
- A set of jumper cables
- A second vehicle with a fully charged battery
Keeping jumper cables in your trunk is always a good idea. Arizona’s extreme heat can take a toll on batteries. For tips on battery life and maintenance, check our guide to regular car battery maintenance.
Step-by-Step Guide to Jump Starting Your Vehicle
- Park the Vehicles: Position the working car close to the car with the dead battery, front to front if possible. Make sure both vehicles are in park (or neutral), and engage the parking brakes.
- Turn Off Both Cars: Switch off the engines and all electronics, including lights, radio, and air conditioning.
- Open the Hoods: Locate the batteries and identify the positive (red, +) and negative (black, –) terminals. Remove any corrosion if necessary.
- Connect the Jumper Cables in Order:
- Attach one red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
- Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery.
- Attach one black clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery.
- Attach the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery, away from the battery itself.
- Start the Working Vehicle: Let it run for a few minutes to transfer power to the dead battery.
- Start the Dead Vehicle: Try starting the car with the dead battery. If it does not start immediately, wait a couple more minutes and try again.
- Remove the Jumper Cables in Reverse Order:
- Remove the black clamp from the grounded metal surface.
- Remove the black clamp from the good battery.
- Remove the red clamp from the good battery.
- Remove the red clamp from the previously dead battery.
- Let the Jumped Car Run: Keep the engine running for at least 15 minutes, or drive for a while to help recharge the battery.
